Transforming Transportation – Cars Now Fly!

Just when everyone is starting to get used to seeing drivers in cars with no hands on the steering wheel or even sightseeing while the car is driving through “Self-Driving” technology, here comes a huge game changer. We all knew it wouldn’t be long before the self-driving and drone craze that’s currently happening decided to blend. These are two technologies which involve AI (artificial intelligence) with the concept of getting processes done faster and more effectively while maintaining safety.  Drone are steadily mastering the skies as most entertainment industries require a drone to take aerial shots, while individuals keep drones to see what is like from so many feet above the ground. Self-driving cars use safety protocols which if the person were driving would have to adhere to, while allowing the driver to let go of the wheel and change focus other than the road without compromising safety. Now how do these two technologies manage to bind together? Well there is a company that IT GURUS OF ATLANTA would like to introduce you to, and they are called “Lilium”.

Now many may have never heard about Lilium, but as of September 5th, 2017, they received investments from a Chinese tech giant called Tencent (TCEHY).  Tencent was a major contributor of a $90 million-dollar fundraiser to fund Lilium’s top project. At this point many are asking, well what is Lilium’s big project and what does it have to with drones or self-driving cars? Well it has everything to do with both technologies. Lilium is testing their version of the “electric flying car”.  Yes, that’s right, the flying electric car is now a reality. Not using gas, or any fossil fuels to affect the environment, but pure electricity, this jet is now testing its way to the mainstream public.

Lilium succeeded in its first prototype testing which was a 2-seater version of the jet. The test was done in April of 2017 and marked as their first successful flight.  Lilium is a German based firm that was originally founded by students from the Technical University of Munich.  These four students founded the company in 2015 and it literally taking flight. Since the injection of funds from Tencent, the company has been on a hiring frenzy taking on executives from top firms. These executives have come from large companies such as Tesla, Rolls Royce, and Airbus.

The magic behind the prototype is 36 propeller engines that use a vertical lift and land technique to maneuver from ground to air or air to ground.  Already capable of flight, which allows it to move 10 times faster than a car, the vision is for the jet to travel at speeds of 186 mph (300 km).  Now that this new company is making waves, here is where the soon to be tech giant is headed. Lilium’s vision is to change the existing prototype into a 5-seater model that will take passengers between nearby destinations such as Manhattan to JFK. The company wants passengers to catch a flight from these jets at a pod (created around the city) just as a person would catch an Uber ride.

Lilium’s jet is capable of hovering, taking, and landing vertically. This type of craft is called a VTOL. VTOLs have existed for years and are mostly used by the military including in helicopters. These crafts also use an extensive amount of fossil fuels. The major difference between a military VTOL and Lilium’s is that it has “zero emissions”, designed for civilian transportation, and when completed, can carry up to 5 people at once to their destination.

Travel by air is the next innovative means of traveling. As we move towards more automation and exploring areas that have previously not been explored, Lilium’s flying electric car is only a glimpse of what is to come. By now there are other companies which are watching closely to see how Lilium performs and if their prototype will go mainstream. One of those companies watching Lilium is IT GURUS OF ATLANTA. Retinal Scans, SmartPhones, and No More Car Keys!

The wave of the future keeps getting brighter and brighter as 2017 pushes forward. So many advances that IT GURUS OF ATLANTA has covered and have still yet to cover. One of the most recent innovations comes with car makers now speaking of Retinal Scans to replace conventional car keys. This innovation could revolutionize the way how car makers produce their lineup of cars and the way how consumers utilize cars in the future.  This software is to be integrated as an app from the car maker and then integrated with the user’s smartphone hardware to make each user’s experience unique.

The concept uses NFC, which is called Near-field communications. Near-filed communications utilizes the retinal scan capabilities of devices such as the iPhone X which does facial recognition. The cameras and the algorithms utilized in devices such as the iPhone X allow the security and unique values needed for automakers to place the app as a car key replacement on the device.  One of the major automakers that are pushing NFC is BMW which is noted to be one of the innovators that integrate technology with automobiles. Another concept which BMW is considering the use of the rear-view mirror to embed the security of NFC in order to gain access into the car’s systems. This would act as a secondary security feature on top of the initial retinal scan of the phone used to open the doors of the vehicle.  Gentex, which is a maker for rear view mirrors is the primary company spoken of at a recent Frankfurt Auto Show to integrate this technology.

BMW board member, Ian Robertson, recently told Reuters, “People never take the key out of their pockets.  So why do I need to carry it around? We are looking at whether it is feasible, and whether we can do it. Whether we do it right now or at some point in the future, remains to be seen.”  BMW already setting the trend prior to integrating this technology by priming the market with the current car keys. BMW is one of the few car makers which offers an LCD wireless key.  What this does is integrate the wireless capabilities of a cell phone and a key fob. BMW’s app currently allows car owners to unlock their car, remote start to warm up the car or cool it down prior to the user entering the vehicle. However, as a security feature, the car will not move without the physical key being present inside the vehicle.

Most of the backlash has come from security experts that question the thought of the car security being hacked and made easy for car thefts to be done. The more mobile and internet based access that physical objects have is a double-edged sword. There is the convenience of access, but there is also the security risk of making some tangible accessible by the intangible threats of hacking. Hackers are the most advanced criminal wave threatening the livelihood of society. Now financial, educational, government, and now automaker institutions join the ranks of other entities that are at risk to this growing threat by adding convenience to their products and services. However, with an ever-changing landscape of technology, if other carmakers are integrating the technology, then the other carmakers have little options but to join the standard to maintain their competitive edge.

Tesla the innovator in the electric car has already stepped up to the plate by offering along with their app, Tesla sends out NFC enabled key cards that allows the car to be unlocked or started by a single tap of the card. Tesla utilized Bluetooth technology that does the unlocking and starting of the vehicle. Tesla continues to innovate and many look towards their much anticipated 2018 models to be released. Tesla always raises the bar in terms of what is thought to be practical versus what is envisioned. Industry car makers and accessories manufacturers such as Gentex are envisioning the future with much successful technology implementations.

Gentex, which owns HomeLink, is in the process of integrating biometrical algorithms in order to allow access to cars. They are partnering with Delta ID to use their current ActiveIris technology to take their systems to the next level.  Currently HomeLink is embedded in most models of the rearview mirrors that are produced by Gentex. Homelink controls the garage doors from the vehicles when they approach or leave the home. Gentex is speaking of integrating current features which are part of an app which has security features such as facial, voice, and fingerprint recognition. The future of Gentex has a road map of including keyless car operation with manufacturers such as BMW, then expanding to full home-automation that includes lighting, security, and HVAC.

First Commercial Flight to Moon in 2018– Tesla, SpaceX, and Elon Musk

The tech world is a buzz today as news about new space suits, NASA, reusable rockets, and more manned missions. In the mix with all of this you might hear of a company called Space X. Space X, many people may think they are associated with Xbox or some super cool sounding product line that’s for electronics. To the surprise of many, Space X is one of the contractors that NASA awarded 1.6 billion dollars for contractual projects in 2008. Space X is one of the largest contractors in North America to service NASA. SpaceX over the next few years, and since 2008 has been contracted to provide 12 cargo transport missions including produce rocket systems for ISS (International Space Station).

Elon Musk – SpaceX – NASA

Elon Musk, who is the CEO and founder of Space X, has been tasked by NASA to have his company create space suits, rocket propulsion systems, and rockets.  Musk’s personal mission for this company has been to have humans occupy a self-sustaining city on Mars and our civilization to be a multi-planet species.  Since embarking on this massive contract from NASA, SpaceX has not only become the first contractor to launch and recover a spacecraft from earth’s orbit, then return it to earth safely.  SpaceX’s specialty which has given them the industry boost that peaked the interest of NASA which is what earned them the award. SpaceX’s industry niche is that they produce fully reusable rockets and spacecrafts. This not only saves NASA billions of dollars, but also allows for production of these rockets and spacecraft to be done quickly and efficiently by reusing the same rockets.

SpaceX and Tesla – Hyperloop

Mr. Musk’s popularity has peaked by him also being the CEO, Co-Founder, and product Architect of Tesla. Yes, that’s right, Tesla. Not too many car enthusiasts have not already heard of Tesla which is leading the way in electrical car innovation and design. By being the CEO of Tesla, he has partnered both companies to do some very extraordinary things. Earlier this year, IT GURUS OF ATLANTA depicted “Hyperloop One’s” hyperloop test which tapped out at 192 MPH to give life into the hyperloop. Who says being the CEO of two multi-billion-dollar companies doesn’t have its perks? Well its does when you are trying to push the technology standards and expectations to new levels. By pushing the standards to new levels, what we mean is that there is a Tesla/SpaceX Hyperloop which is making waves. This hyperloop has already tested down SpaceX’s Hyperloop test track at speeds of 220 MPH which beats Hyperloop One’s test just a few months prior. This being their initial test of their Hyperloop, they are anticipating its next leap will be to achieve the speed of sound which is at 500 MPH.  By having students to compete through a competition, SpaceX and Tesla have brought around friendly competition, and its competition without a price tag being attached.

 

Falcon 9 and Dragon Spacecraft

Falcon 9 is what SpaceX used to makes its debut with NASA being the first commercial company to enter earth’s orbit and contact the ISS (International Space Station). Most contacts with the station have been strictly government based and 100% through NASA as the conduit. Most rockets that have been used in the past were one-time use based which the parts dissipated over the ocean, went into the solar orbit of the sun, or dropped on the moon. Now what sets SpaceX’s Falcon 9 different form the rest is that it is completely reusable. Falcon 9 has only two stages of separation unlike previous rockets, and all parts land back at the location from which they originally took off successfully. This ability for the rocket to be used repeatedly cuts the cost of production for the rocket including increases the amount of missions the rocket can accomplish. Dragon is cargo capsule which Falcon 9 has been using to transport cargo and supplies to the crew aboard the ISS (International Space Station). So far Falcon 9 and Dragon have completed 11 missions for 2017, which is more than the 9 which were completed last year and year still isn’t over.

SpaceX Private Crew on Dragon Spacecraft to Go Past Moon 2018

Two private citizens have paid to be a part of the manned crew that the Dragon 2 Spacecraft will take around the moon next year. The two individuals will be accompanied by a commercial crew which is currently being tested extensively through fitness and health tests. This effort is part of the deal that SpaceX sparked with NASA and they are dubbing it their Commercial Crew Program.  The first part of the program will include an “automatic” mode which will have the entire Spacecraft automatically launch and link with the ISS (International Space Station) and is slated for first quarter of 2018. The second phase of the program includes having a crew going up to the ISS (International Space Station).  The second phase is scheduled to take place in the 2nd quarter of 2018.  This historical liftoff will take place at Kennedy Space Center’s historic Pad 39A near Cape Canaveral.  This moment is marked since humans have not returned to deep space in the last 45 years. After these trips around the moon become more frequent, the next phase in the project is to get humans to make regular trips to Mars.

The SpaceX Space Suit

Mr. Mock has decided to unveil even more goodies to the IT world as he has taken the dream further by showing off their SpaceX space suits. No longer the bulky images of the past astronauts, but now a sleeker design which does more to protect the person wearing it than previous bulky designs.  The suits offer more agility and flexibility when the wearers are looking to move around the ship. Bear in mind that these are not replacements for the suits used to walk in outer space as they do very little to protect against the harsh atmosphere that outer space has.  The suits will be used during space travel into outer space and back. This is designed in case cabin pressure is lost then the suits will compensate to protect the wearer. The first manned missions which the astronauts will wear these all white suits is scheduled to take place on May 2018.

Artificial Intelligence, Rapid Integration, and the move to Consciousness!

It has been talked about and brought to life in movies and series such as Star Trek, and I, Robot. In Star Trek we see machines such as Data which is self-aware, but very helpful to human beings and also very protective of the human race. On the other hand we see I, Robot in which the robots choose to use their state of consciousness in order to take over and move to attempt to eliminate the human race. Both are similar in their depiction of Artificial Intelligence being a constantly evolving software that reaches the tipping point to choose to be either “bad” or “good”.

 

 

In the news, articles and shows, the word AI has been used so frequently that most people when they hear the word it doesn’t prime a severe reaction, but maybe a grunt or good read if you are lucky. However, lets peel back the possibilities and see where we are today using Artificial Intelligence. We are rapidly developing AI as a human race on a global scale. The integration of AI in almost every technology has been seamless and most people use AI daily without even realizing the gradual integration. For example, Siri, Google Now, and Cortana are virtual assistants that assist users in making their experience with a device more interactive and memorable. AI in the background gathers and uses the information to be more efficient at helping its owners to achieve any task they desire on their device of choice.

Video games is another noted system integrated with AI which is why the game changes scenes and difficulty levels due to the playing habits and skill level of the user or users playing the games.  The software constantly is learning and using the data from the games being played in order to become better and more efficient. Over the years the types of AI and the ability that the software has compared to years ago is a completely different system now compared to then. One heavily AI integrated game is 2014’s Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. In this game, each of the non-player characters have individual personality and memories of past interactions including previous objectives. Other noted games are Call of Duty and Far Cry which use the data gathered by AI to strategize, analyze environments, investigate sounds, and find objects. This AI is a money maker in its usefulness which is why gamers are always spending millions of dollars to keep up with this technology and assist in making it greater.

 

 

 

If you are noticing a rise in “self-driving” cars or cars that can reverse and park on their own, well this is because they have an on-board AI which is constantly learning and can depict the environment to determine when to move the wheel, change gears, or apply the brake in various cases.  In the news lately has been Google’s self-driving car project and Tesla’s auto-driving feature. The algorithm that Google is using for its AI is capable or allowing the AI to learn how to drive in the same manner that humans are capable.

There are so many notable instance of AI in today’s society which include purchase prediction, fraud protection, online customer support, and much more. Some of the more notable aspects are AI being able to monitor security surveillance, recommend movies, smart home devices, and much more. There is even a second layer to the AI intelligence arena which has been noted ahead of its time, but is giving AI the access and data it needs to learn part of us allowing AI to be self-aware and self-reliant? Well the answer to that is no, because every action of AI currently needs commands to be programed in the machine in order for it to learn or gesture in the manner that we see.

 

So the answer to the question is “no”, there is no wave of robots etching to take over the world in the near future as they become self-aware, but with advances in AI including Deep Learning integration, the possibilities of tomorrow are endless.
