Project Loon – Internet and Phone Access without Towers or Cables!

Sunday, October 8th, 2017

Sometimes disaster brings out the opportunity for technology to take that first step for it to become mainstream. However unfortunate the disaster may be, the technology provides the solution to allow communications to continue that the disaster struck areas can get the assistance that they need. Even though we are at the cusp of breakthroughs and our technology is state of the art, detecting people or their ability to let the world know that they need aid can be limited in a disaster. A perfect example is Peru and recently Puerto Rico.  Both countries have been ravaged by natural disasters which has left the countries with very little ability to communicate with the outside world. Families have been dissipated and homes have been destroyed due to these events. With families that are in other countries that could provide vital aid or governments that need to view the damage, communication and the internet is key.

IT GURUS OF ATLANTA brought to light the steps that different industry leaders such as Facebook, Google, and X (owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet) are taking to bring internet to the rest of the world that don’t have the sophisticated towers of major cities through giant balloons. Many major organizations such as Facebook have tested the possibilities and are still vetting approval for testing to take place in major cities, but are getting pushback due to ISP providers have not collaborated with these companies and the state/federal restrictions, not to mention FAA guidelines for this type of technology to be dispersed. One company out of the masses was granted approval to service another country during their disaster. That country was Peru and their ISP has been allowing testing to be done with X.  The telecommunications carrier called Telefonica (TEF) has been working with X for months prior to their disaster to get ahead of other countries with this technology. Fortunately for Peru, their gamble to allow X to perform their tests gave them the optimal coverage that they needed to communicate with the rest of the world by providing the much-needed internet and voice services during their disaster. The testing which was done and the disaster usage of this technology has catapulted X to new horizons and pushed this technology to the forefront of not only disaster recovery, but also stretching the barriers of communication out to rural areas.  The possibilities of this technology and its uses are endless.

X has dubbed the name of this project as “Project Loon”. Project Loon has become ever increasingly visible with all the hurricane activity which has been hitting the US coastlines and islands with devastating results. One of the major islands for the US which is currently suffering is Puerto Rico. After damaging floods from Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria again hit the island. Since the aftermath of these two disasters, the island is still having power issues, and typical communication methods such as cell phones or the internet are incapable of being used. Power for much of the island is still out and families within the US are devastated by not knowing the fate of loved ones that have been living in Puerto Rico during the storm. Fortunately, the US government has been keeping an eye on Project Loon and noticed its benefit to Peru. Due to the devastation and the success that Peru had with Project Loon, the US government has granted an experimental license for X to provide communications to Puerto Rico.

This approval by the Federal Communications Commission is exactly the type of boost that X has needed to make its mark in the US. It is the opportunity for X to show that Project Loon can support disasters and give the visibility that the world needs to communicate with disaster struck countries. Alphabet, which owns X and Google is has conquered the first hurdle with the approval by the government. However, the approval is only the first barrier that had to be overcome. Unlike Peru, Puerto Rico had not been testing Project Loon before the disasters took place. The problem is Project Loon extends the coverage of a local telecommunications company and distributes those signals through the balloons hovering over the island. Without the testing and collaboration of a pre-designated telecommunications provider, testing and integration must be done with both systems. These tests are vital to ensure that the system works successfully with the designated telecommunications carrier. Even though the system has been proven to work in Peru with Telefonica, these are two different systems, with one that has already been tested and one has not. Despite the hurdles and barriers in front of Project Loon, they have assured that they are making steady progress to successfully launch communications.

Disasters are horrific and never good for people, neighborhoods, cities, or countries.  As unpredictable as natural disasters are, it is the responsibility of the country to ensure that the people enduring this hardship can communicate at the bare minimum. The US is trying to get Puerto Rico back in good standing through the Loon Project which can not only help Puerto Rico, but also connect parts of the country and the world that are in lack of internet and voice. We at IT GURUS OF ATLANTA commend X with their efforts to bring this technology mainstream and look forward to their continued growth to help countries such as Puerto Rico get and stay connected to the rest of the world.

Passenger Drone Now In The US – Order like a Taxi!

Sunday, September 10th, 2017

Now who is ready for more state of the art technology? IT GURUS OF ATLANTA says the word is ready! When speaking of state of the art, we speak of the next level in technological advancements. Earlier this year we spoke about the new drones being pushed by Amazon that are being utilized to make their deliveries more efficient. Soon Amazon will be making deliveries to doorsteps of millions of homes in America once they have been approved by the government to do so. Now with even better drones being built by the hour, why not shape the way we travel while we are at it? Well a company in China is doing just that. The name of the company is called Ehang. Ehang has developed passenger drones which are capable of carrying passengers to and from locations the same way a drone would.

The prototype has been cleared for testing in the state of Nevada.  With the possibility of this passenger drone being sold commercially, this is a huge move for the company to get their product in the US.  Ehang’s drone is capable of carrying 1 passenger for 23 minutes in any direction the same way a drone would. The passenger drone is capable of traveling at altitudes of 11,500 feet and moving at 63 mph. The drone is completely electric and comprised of 8 propellers, 4 main arms which has upper and lower arms, can carry up to 264lbs, and has the same features of a conventional quadcopter.

Ehang partnered with the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS) and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (Goed) in order to get approval for the testing in Nevada. The goal of the company is to unleash the possibilities of aerial transportation on a commercial level. The vision of the company is for passengers to input their destination in the drone then allow the drone to complete the trip autonomously. These tests in Nevada are necessary in order for the FAA to approve the Ehang 184 for commercial use. Nevada has been noted as one of the forward-thinking states to allow the testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads such as the Google self-driving car.

The vehicle would not have any controls for the passenger to use. They would simply program their destination in their app, the vehicle would arrive to pick them up, and then take them to their destination. This would be done with very little interaction. As a backup, the company states that it would instill a remote-control center which would take over the vehicle in case any problems arise.

Being that this is cutting edge on the market, Ehang has matched the price with the demand by asking for $200,000 to $300,000 per vehicle. Even with the drone being tested currently, it still has hurdles to overcome such as being able to use the 4G wireless network in order to utilize the GPS, divert from potential hazards, and detect more efficient routes. The current concerns of the FAA is that there are no controls as well as safety concerns which the tests in Nevada will have to overcome.

With the growth of drone usage and autonomous vehicles taking over in companies such as Uber, Lyft, Google self-driving, and now the Ehang 184, it is clear that autonomous vehicles are here to stay. No longer are they a vision of the future or in sci-fi movies. The automation and sophistication of the future is now here in 2017.

First Commercial Flight to Moon in 2018– Tesla, SpaceX, and Elon Musk

Monday, September 4th, 2017

The tech world is a buzz today as news about new space suits, NASA, reusable rockets, and more manned missions. In the mix with all of this you might hear of a company called Space X. Space X, many people may think they are associated with Xbox or some super cool sounding product line that’s for electronics. To the surprise of many, Space X is one of the contractors that NASA awarded 1.6 billion dollars for contractual projects in 2008. Space X is one of the largest contractors in North America to service NASA. SpaceX over the next few years, and since 2008 has been contracted to provide 12 cargo transport missions including produce rocket systems for ISS (International Space Station).

Elon Musk – SpaceX – NASA

Elon Musk, who is the CEO and founder of Space X, has been tasked by NASA to have his company create space suits, rocket propulsion systems, and rockets.  Musk’s personal mission for this company has been to have humans occupy a self-sustaining city on Mars and our civilization to be a multi-planet species.  Since embarking on this massive contract from NASA, SpaceX has not only become the first contractor to launch and recover a spacecraft from earth’s orbit, then return it to earth safely.  SpaceX’s specialty which has given them the industry boost that peaked the interest of NASA which is what earned them the award. SpaceX’s industry niche is that they produce fully reusable rockets and spacecrafts. This not only saves NASA billions of dollars, but also allows for production of these rockets and spacecraft to be done quickly and efficiently by reusing the same rockets.

SpaceX and Tesla – Hyperloop

Mr. Musk’s popularity has peaked by him also being the CEO, Co-Founder, and product Architect of Tesla. Yes, that’s right, Tesla. Not too many car enthusiasts have not already heard of Tesla which is leading the way in electrical car innovation and design. By being the CEO of Tesla, he has partnered both companies to do some very extraordinary things. Earlier this year, IT GURUS OF ATLANTA depicted “Hyperloop One’s” hyperloop test which tapped out at 192 MPH to give life into the hyperloop. Who says being the CEO of two multi-billion-dollar companies doesn’t have its perks? Well its does when you are trying to push the technology standards and expectations to new levels. By pushing the standards to new levels, what we mean is that there is a Tesla/SpaceX Hyperloop which is making waves. This hyperloop has already tested down SpaceX’s Hyperloop test track at speeds of 220 MPH which beats Hyperloop One’s test just a few months prior. This being their initial test of their Hyperloop, they are anticipating its next leap will be to achieve the speed of sound which is at 500 MPH.  By having students to compete through a competition, SpaceX and Tesla have brought around friendly competition, and its competition without a price tag being attached.

Falcon 9 and Dragon Spacecraft

Falcon 9 is what SpaceX used to makes its debut with NASA being the first commercial company to enter earth’s orbit and contact the ISS (International Space Station). Most contacts with the station have been strictly government based and 100% through NASA as the conduit. Most rockets that have been used in the past were one-time use based which the parts dissipated over the ocean, went into the solar orbit of the sun, or dropped on the moon. Now what sets SpaceX’s Falcon 9 different form the rest is that it is completely reusable. Falcon 9 has only two stages of separation unlike previous rockets, and all parts land back at the location from which they originally took off successfully. This ability for the rocket to be used repeatedly cuts the cost of production for the rocket including increases the amount of missions the rocket can accomplish. Dragon is cargo capsule which Falcon 9 has been using to transport cargo and supplies to the crew aboard the ISS (International Space Station). So far Falcon 9 and Dragon have completed 11 missions for 2017, which is more than the 9 which were completed last year and year still isn’t over.

SpaceX Private Crew on Dragon Spacecraft to Go Past Moon 2018

Two private citizens have paid to be a part of the manned crew that the Dragon 2 Spacecraft will take around the moon next year. The two individuals will be accompanied by a commercial crew which is currently being tested extensively through fitness and health tests. This effort is part of the deal that SpaceX sparked with NASA and they are dubbing it their Commercial Crew Program.  The first part of the program will include an “automatic” mode which will have the entire Spacecraft automatically launch and link with the ISS (International Space Station) and is slated for first quarter of 2018. The second phase of the program includes having a crew going up to the ISS (International Space Station).  The second phase is scheduled to take place in the 2nd quarter of 2018.  This historical liftoff will take place at Kennedy Space Center’s historic Pad 39A near Cape Canaveral.  This moment is marked since humans have not returned to deep space in the last 45 years. After these trips around the moon become more frequent, the next phase in the project is to get humans to make regular trips to Mars.

The SpaceX Space Suit

Mr. Mock has decided to unveil even more goodies to the IT world as he has taken the dream further by showing off their SpaceX space suits. No longer the bulky images of the past astronauts, but now a sleeker design which does more to protect the person wearing it than previous bulky designs.  The suits offer more agility and flexibility when the wearers are looking to move around the ship. Bear in mind that these are not replacements for the suits used to walk in outer space as they do very little to protect against the harsh atmosphere that outer space has.  The suits will be used during space travel into outer space and back. This is designed in case cabin pressure is lost then the suits will compensate to protect the wearer. The first manned missions which the astronauts will wear these all white suits is scheduled to take place on May 2018.

New Tech Possible Use in Mayweather Vs. McGregor Fight! Blending Physical with Tech!

Saturday, August 26th, 2017

Now who in the world of technology, sports, or entertainment has not heard of the huge Main Event on Saturday, August 26th, 2017. The main event which I am speaking of is McGregor Vs. Mayweather. This fight has been all over the news since the beginning of the name calling, extravagant photo scenes, press conferences, and live appearances by both boxers to show their personalities. From the young to the old which has a television, smartphone, tablet, computer, radio, or just general access to the internet has heard of this event for months in the making. McGregor coming from a Mixed Martial arts background winning multiple titles to Mayweather which is an undefeated boxing legend, both these box office smashers bring a plethora of experience from different arenas to this one history making event.  These two titans are engaged to a battle which will reveal one victor.

As sports fans and entertainment enthusiasts gather to watch the event either live or via multiple broadcasting platforms, technology experts are geared up to see the possibility of the introduction of a new technology to the Main Event arena. This new technology which we speak of is called “StrikeTec”. These are wearable sensors which the boxers would wear to keep track of their movements, force, number of punches thrown, and speed. This valuable data can give accurate information which the naked eye can sometimes miss and data that can be further used for training and even gaming software.

The StrikeTec wearable sensors progress and learn along with the user. The more the user wears the devices is the more accurate the data is evaluating the performances and giving meaningful insights and reports designed to increase performance.  Coaches can use the data to determine the force of a punch, the speed at which the punches are being thrown, and determine the exhaustion rate more accurately than ever. More than just using previous techniques that have been effective in the past, this data can prove that technology can blend naturally with physical improvement.

The sensors themselves are 7mm in height and 18mm in length. The sensors are attached to the user’s wristband and communicates via Bluetooth to the StrikeTec Boxing Training App. The user’s routines, and current stats are translated into real-time data which is used to determine how the coach will increase or decrease the boxer’s activities during a fight.

Between Mayweather and McGregor, it is possible to see this technology being utilized to analyze how the boxers are performing and how the coaches communicate with them. Even though unconfirmed that McGregor and Mayweather fight will be using this exact technology, the boxing and technology world is a buzz with the possibilities that technology and boxing are blending in this huge Main Event.

For the gamers amongst us, this data will surely be used in future games to be brought out by EA sports and other large gaming companies. Previously the data from fights and training of these boxers were either compiled through the naked eye in the past or through suits the boxers wear with multiple sensors to monitor movement. The data used in previous games was sometimes viewed as biased, however, with the current evolution of technology and its accuracy gamers are certain to get more accuracy with their games. This invaluable data which is currently being captured by StrikeTec is not only being transitioned from boxing, but into other sports such as Mixed Martial Arts, and Kickboxing. As the water resistant capabilities expand with this technology, swimming and other water sports are sure to follow in the line of sports that this technology will be used to monitor athletes! IT GURUS OF ATLANTA is always there at the edge of cutting edge technology and we will embrace the efforts of StrikeTec as they expand their growing reaching in the sporting arena.

Solar Eclipse and Mobile Technology!

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

If you are one of the millions of people that are planning on watching the Solar Eclipse which is scheduled to take place on Monday August 21st, 2017, then you may want to read much further in this article as you could be one of the many people that will experience loss in service or slow speeds when trying to access certain networks while the eclipse is taking place.

To give some history about the Solar Eclipse which is taking place, a solar eclipse takes place anywhere from 2-5 times per year. However, a solar eclipse being visible on mainland is very rare. It is rare to the point that the last time there was a Solar Eclipse visible in the United States was 38 years ago on March 1979.

After this solar eclipse taking place on Monday, August 21st, 2017, the next time that a full eclipse will be visible by mainland will be April 2024 and it will not be as visible to as many US locations as this one scheduled for 2017.  A Solar Eclipse takes on average, about 375 years to recur again in the same location.

Due to this eclipse being not only rare, but also getting lots of media attention, many are gathering in locations which are shown to have the most coverage for the Solar Eclipse. For a full view of the path of the Solar Eclipse and times, you can refer to the picture that was provided by NASA. Many are planning on travelling to these locations to get the full experience of the total Solar Eclipse in its entirety. These locations will be prime for data lagging, heavy cell phone tower usage, and the phone carrier systems getting overloaded by the massive amounts of people on the network in that area at the time.

Just like firefighters engaging into a fire, cell phone carriers have decided to use more conventional methods to deal with this heavy data and voice traffic which is anticipated for that period of time. Carriers such as At&t, Verizon, and Sprint are going to have mobile trucks designed to boost cell phone traffic in these specified locations.  One of the key locations which will experience the eclipse in its totality will be Hopkinsville, Kentucky. This location is to have the eclipse last an entire 2 minute and 40 second duration.

Fortunately the team here at IT GURUS OF ATLANTA has some tips for people which may have difficult accessing the network which can help to still capture the moment and communicate with people that are not in your immediate vicinity. Bare in mind that these are steps to be taken in sequence if one or more of the other steps do not work.

One of the first steps is to text instead of taking the call. Texting uses ups the least amount of cell phone traffic and can be sent in a manner of seconds as opposed to waiting for a voice call to connect on both ends to have a conversation.

Another nifty trick is to disable application updates which can come at any given point in time during the day from various application providers which can use up background data causing lag in not only your service but the service of anyone else in the area.

Taking a fully charged phone is always the best scenario. The last thing that could break the experience for anyone involved would be to have the one mode of communication go dead during the Solar Eclipse and no communication being done during this memorable occasion. Its always a good idea to have a backup battery if using Android or if using Apple, to have a mobile pack which does cell phone charging.

Depending on your budget, if you have access to another cell phone or hotspot on another network, then that may very well be the answer to lagging service on your current carrier during the event.

The most sustainable way to ensure that your moment is covered during the event is to record the video, take the picture, and save it on your device for upload at a later point in time. When streaming during events such as these, it is a sure way to clog up the network and assure that not only your experience is interrupted but also that of others in the vicinity as well. Streaming during the event by doing a Facebook Live or Instagram Live video while in the trajectory areas for the total Solar Eclipse will assure that if there wasn’t a possibility of network shutdown, that there is one now.

This total Solar Eclipse is geared to be a very momentous event as the last time there was a coast to coast event of this magnitude for this event was in 1918. IT GURUS OF ATLANTA is geared up to provide tips, tricks, and advice on technology effects during this moment in history.

Netflix is finally letting you watch shows offline

Tuesday, December 27th, 2016

Netflix app on iOS and Android allows subscribers to download movies and shows, so they won’t be bereft of Stranger Things when they leave the comfort of their home Wi-Fi networks. Netflix isn’t the first streaming service to allow for downloadable content and they certainly won’t be the last.

For the time being, only a select number of titles are available. Most Netflix Originals, including The Crown and Narcos, are available, as are many titles for which Netflix owns licenses. Though incomplete, the selection will probably outstrip what’s available on even the best airline in-flight entertainment offerings; it features cinematic crowd-pleasers like Jaws and Amelie as well as mainstay TV series like Breaking Bad and Parks & Recreation. Subscribers can find downloadable content one of two ways. The app menu features an “Available for Download” sorting option, or by stumbling on a download icon in a movie or show’s details page.

Viewers also have control over how and when downloads can occur. By default, they’ll only happen over Wi-Fi, but you can opt to switch to cellular data.

You can also choose between what Netflix is calling “standard” and “higher” quality videos, but the company doesn’t specify what either means in terms of actual video specs. What we do know is that “standard” eats up less storage and downloads more quickly, and the opposite is true for “higher” quality. Access these settings by scrolling all the way to bottom of the app’s pull-down menu and tapping “App Settings.”

The addition of offline viewing is a bit of a reversal for Netflix. Two years ago, the company’s director of corporate communications and technology, Cliff Edwards, told Tech Radar offline viewing was “never going to happen.” But competitors rolling out the feature, in addition to third-party workarounds, may have pushed its back against the wall.

In addition to Amazon Instant Video, PlayOn Cloud allows DVR-like recording of streaming video services, including Netflix, Hulu, and HBOGo through its iOS app. And TiVo users can transfer recordings to their mobile devices through the TiVo app to watch on the go.

The push for offline viewing capability comes at an interesting moment for mobile Wi-Fi. As cellular carriers ready for the eventual switch to 5G towers, demand for connectivity is forcing more providers to explore Wi-Fi-based options.

Google’s experimental Project Fi network, for one, relies heavily on a vast network of trusted hotspots. Meanwhile, commuter networks—be they underground or in the air—continue to promise faster, more-reliable speeds. GoGo, the provider who owns the majority of in-flight Wi-Fi, recently announced upgrades to its network to help speed downloads and uploads.

Still, the more users start downloading episodes of Breaking Bad with reckless abandon on these public-access hotspots, the harder it will become to grab what you want when you want it. That’s why some mainstay streaming services, specifically Hulu, will stay online-only for now.

From a functionality point-of view, the end-game for offline viewing is all about persevering mobile bandwidth. The more crowded networks get, the more painfully sluggish streaming and downloading become—that is, if they don’t grind to a complete halt. The ability to download a movie or TV show over Wi-Fi before leaving home, Hulu’s head of experience Ben Smith told CIO insider, is the key to avoiding bandwidth bog-down. “I actually think offline is more interesting in relation to bandwidth, and how people consume bandwidth,” he said.

4 Ways to Boost Your Productivity Using Tech

Thursday, March 31st, 2016

Increase-Productivity

Today’s technology fueled world definitely has its share of headaches. For all of these, however, it also has some amazing potential productivity enhancements, many of which you might not be taking advantage of! In this list, we will be taking a look at 4 ways to maximize your staff’s productivity using the technology you already use every day! Let’s begin:

1.       Track Your Time

In the modern office, distractions are literally everywhere. Staying on task can be quite a challenge for many, but the good news is there are tools to aid with this. Rescue Time is one such tool that we happily recommend. It allows you to track your progress throughout the day, and it even shows you exactly how you spend your time on your computer as you go through it. This app is also great from a management perspective, because it allows you to ensure that your workers are staying on task throughout their workday.

2.       Collaborate In The Clouduntitled26156

The advent of cloud technology brought on some huge changes to the world of online businesses. More and more, businesses are allowing their employees to go location independent, working remotely through the cloud in cohesion with their coworkers back home. This can dramatically boost employee happiness and productivity, and it allows for a much more flexible task management system. With all of your files on the cloud, you can empower your employees to do their best, no matter where they are!

3.       Keep Your Tech Current

We know just how much of a hassle it can be to replace older equipment. Not only is it expensive, but it is time-consuming, and often very tedious as well. Despite this, it is absolutely essential that you keep good tech in the hands of your employees, and not only for productivity reasons. Older technology faces more risks, from loss due to breakage to security issues. However, keeping your PC’s and other equipment up to date will ensure their well-being, and keep your productivity at its peak. Nothing will slow someone down faster than a frozen desktop, so avoiding these issues is a huge part of maximizing your business flow.

IT GURUS OF ATLANTA 54.       Outsource Your IT Needs

Whether you already have an in-house IT department or not, one thing is for sure; IT issues can be one of the most distracting things office employees deal with. Malfunctioning equipment, security threats, scheduled maintenance; all of these IT woes can knock a worker directly out of their flow if given the chance to. By outsourcing your IT to a remote partner, all of these tasks will be happening behind the scenes, making it easier for your employees to do their work productively and efficiently.
