Real-Time Facial Recognition – Dash Board and Body Cams!

The criminal element seems to get smarter and smarter by the moment. For these reasons there are several advancements in technology that law enforcement does not share to stay ahead of the criminal mind, while not fully disclosing what their capabilities are.  One technology in law enforcement that has become public knowledge is their facial recognition software which allows them to use pictures or sketches of individuals to check their criminal, warrant, missing persons, and illegal immigrant databases.  The software connects to several different databases and can take some time if all it has is facial recognition. It takes that much longer if it is a partial image, if its blurry, or no description is added such as name, address, dob, etc.  For this reason, people are detained to allow the software time to run and fully check the various databases and ensure the records being displayed are the records for the person law enforcement is seeking or already has in custody.

Another new technology which has been added to the law enforcement arsenal is the use of body cams. This addition has come not only to recognize the criminal element, but also to lawfully protect civilians and officers in the event of a negative interaction. The footage can be viewed and used once the camera is recovered and the images downloaded into the system. Officers and civilians alike have new found confidence in knowing that interactions with each other now have a historical map for others to see the event as it unfolded. This technology is still being introduced to all aspects of law enforcement and is rapidly becoming the standard for all to follow.

With both facial recognition software and body cams, law enforcement has a greater edge at continuing to spot criminals and their activities. But, there is more.  A Boston based startup company called Neurala specializing in Artificial Intelligence, has teamed up with Motorola build what they call “real-time learning for a person of interest”. The “real-time learning for a person of interest” is a term they are using to describe an “unnamed” system that incorporates both body cam and facial recognition.  The founder of the startup company, Massimiliano Versace, already has patents pending on this AI version of facial recognition software.

Versace developed a technology which is based on using AI to rapidly go through codes which are developed through facial recognition software.  By using AI to go through the codes, the information is processed faster and can be harnessed from even smaller computers.  By using smaller computers, Versace’s intent is to place the micro-computers into body cams.  Some may say a smaller computer is not a big deal, but for world of technology and computing, that is a very big deal. The ability to utilize bulky applications on a smaller computer means less storage space and less processor requirements to complete complex jobs that larger machines are used to complete today.

A deeper look at how the system works is that, the AI would essentially network between each other in the various body cams the same a hive would operate. They would constantly be on in a camera going through a stream of images and rapidly sharing the information between databases and each network of body cams. In this case, the AI would and could capture an image that a law enforcement official might not have or alert an official of the presence of a criminal or missing person that is nearby caught by another body cam.  More importantly, the AI would constantly be updated in real-time, which means that the minute a criminal is apprehended, or a missing person is found, the image would be removed, and the databases would be instantly updated. The same scenario would take place for new criminals or new missing persons.

There are many possibilities for this new technology that it will change the face of how not only law enforcement detects criminals and missing persons, but also how computers interact. Artificial Intelligence is a technology which is rapidly gaining momentum as we integrate it into homes, smartphones, computers, and the way we live. Artificial Intelligence, Rapid Integration, and the move to Consciousness!

It has been talked about and brought to life in movies and series such as Star Trek, and I, Robot. In Star Trek we see machines such as Data which is self-aware, but very helpful to human beings and also very protective of the human race. On the other hand we see I, Robot in which the robots choose to use their state of consciousness in order to take over and move to attempt to eliminate the human race. Both are similar in their depiction of Artificial Intelligence being a constantly evolving software that reaches the tipping point to choose to be either “bad” or “good”.

 

 

In the news, articles and shows, the word AI has been used so frequently that most people when they hear the word it doesn’t prime a severe reaction, but maybe a grunt or good read if you are lucky. However, lets peel back the possibilities and see where we are today using Artificial Intelligence. We are rapidly developing AI as a human race on a global scale. The integration of AI in almost every technology has been seamless and most people use AI daily without even realizing the gradual integration. For example, Siri, Google Now, and Cortana are virtual assistants that assist users in making their experience with a device more interactive and memorable. AI in the background gathers and uses the information to be more efficient at helping its owners to achieve any task they desire on their device of choice.

Video games is another noted system integrated with AI which is why the game changes scenes and difficulty levels due to the playing habits and skill level of the user or users playing the games.  The software constantly is learning and using the data from the games being played in order to become better and more efficient. Over the years the types of AI and the ability that the software has compared to years ago is a completely different system now compared to then. One heavily AI integrated game is 2014’s Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. In this game, each of the non-player characters have individual personality and memories of past interactions including previous objectives. Other noted games are Call of Duty and Far Cry which use the data gathered by AI to strategize, analyze environments, investigate sounds, and find objects. This AI is a money maker in its usefulness which is why gamers are always spending millions of dollars to keep up with this technology and assist in making it greater.

 

 

 

If you are noticing a rise in “self-driving” cars or cars that can reverse and park on their own, well this is because they have an on-board AI which is constantly learning and can depict the environment to determine when to move the wheel, change gears, or apply the brake in various cases.  In the news lately has been Google’s self-driving car project and Tesla’s auto-driving feature. The algorithm that Google is using for its AI is capable or allowing the AI to learn how to drive in the same manner that humans are capable.

There are so many notable instance of AI in today’s society which include purchase prediction, fraud protection, online customer support, and much more. Some of the more notable aspects are AI being able to monitor security surveillance, recommend movies, smart home devices, and much more. There is even a second layer to the AI intelligence arena which has been noted ahead of its time, but is giving AI the access and data it needs to learn part of us allowing AI to be self-aware and self-reliant? Well the answer to that is no, because every action of AI currently needs commands to be programed in the machine in order for it to learn or gesture in the manner that we see.

 

So the answer to the question is “no”, there is no wave of robots etching to take over the world in the near future as they become self-aware, but with advances in AI including Deep Learning integration, the possibilities of tomorrow are endless.

China now using Face-Recognition software to grant access to facilities and Track criminals

Companies like Face++ are changing the landscape in China when it comes to technology and utilizing facial-recognition software. The company is a startup company, but is already valued at over a billion dollars. Face++ is using its investments in order to diversify and integrate facial-recognition software into critical security systems.

The software updates done by Face++ are cutting edge which allows devices to track 83 facial points at the same time, and from multiple angles to give recognition ability which is like no other.  The updates that Face++ has been giving facial-recognition is already being integrated in many popular applications such as Alipay and Didi. Both applications are major applications in China that are used to make mobile payments and get rides like Uber has done in the US. The Didi app allows users to double check the driver that is coming by making them move their heads and use speech recognition that no one can substitute the driver or use a photo. Payments via the Alipay app allows users to use face and voice combinations in order to complete payments.

 

The Chinese government has already invested using Face++ facial-recognition software to tap into surveillance being done on criminals by tapping into their centralized ID databases and cameras to quickly apprehend and document activity by known criminals. Even though the mugshots and the images obtained from cameras are not all the time accurate, it gives a percentage possibility of that person being the person of interest and narrows down the possibility of monitoring or apprehending the wrong suspect. Utilizing cameras and face-recognition is definitely ahead of its time and is geared to change not only the Chinese government’s methods of fighting crime, but will soon spread to other countries as it gains more popularity in the security front.
